between diabetes and dementia |
Researchers in Australia reviewing the results of fourteen
studies involving more than two million people. The analysis also includes data
about 100 thousand patients with dementia.
People who suffer from diabetes type two, sixty percent more
likely to develop a form of dementia.
The researchers found that women with diabetes are twice as
likely to suffer from dementia which is caused by damage to blood vessels. The
number of female patients is also higher than for men who suffer from diabetes.
The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease,
which is characterized by the buildup of residual proteins in the brain.
Vascular dementia caused by blood vessels to the brain are
damaged, and are more common in diabetics.
The study authors say that women are more at risk of
developing vascular dementia because they are not treated as often as men
suffer from high blood pressure. The rise in blood pressure can cause heart
disease.
Scientists say more research is needed to understand how
blood sugar is too much can affect the blood vessels, especially in women.
They emphasize keep trying healthy through exercise and
diet, and not smoking, can help reduce the risk of vascular dementia in
diabetics.
The findings were published in the Journal Diabetes Care.
